The River Cuale bisects Puerto
Vallarta. It starts high up in the Sierra Madre
and runs down through Vallarta, splitting in
the middle of town to give us the island, and
disappears into the Pacific Ocean. When we speak
of the town, we always refer to south and north
of the bridges that span the Cuale.

season, and dries to a trickle just before the
rain begins again each year. This trip takes
us upriver, through the beautiful jungle, and
up to the Salto Waterfalls. It's about a 12km
(7.5 mile) hike, suitable for the entire family.
